Why the metric system uses powers of ten

The metre was originally defined in 1793 as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole, specifically so that every larger and smaller unit could be reached by simply moving a decimal point. That single design choice is why converting kilometres to metres is multiplication by 1,000 while converting miles to feet requires remembering 5,280 — an arbitrary number with no relationship to anything else in the imperial system.

Why imperial units don't divide evenly by ten

Imperial units grew historically from human-scale references — a foot, a pace, a day's ploughing — refined for local trade rather than designed as a coherent system. Twelve inches to a foot and three feet to a yard reflect that twelve and other non-decimal numbers divide evenly into more small whole fractions than ten does, which mattered more to merchants splitting goods than to anyone doing arithmetic.

Temperature conversion is the odd one out

Length, weight and volume conversions are all pure multiplication because their zero points agree — zero metres is zero feet. Celsius and Fahrenheit disagree about where zero falls, so the conversion needs both a multiplication and an addition: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32. That extra step is not a quirk of this calculator; it is a direct consequence of the two scales being built around different reference points — Celsius around water's freezing point, Fahrenheit originally around a brine mixture.

Where rounding actually matters

A recipe converted from cups to millilitres and rounded to the nearest whole number is fine — baking tolerates a percent or two of error. A medication dose, a fuel mixture ratio, or a construction measurement does not carry the same tolerance, and rounding that felt harmless in one context can compound into a real error in another. Match the precision you keep to what the conversion is actually for.

Why the US still holds out

The United States, Liberia and Myanmar are the only countries that have not officially adopted the metric system as their primary standard. In the US the reasons are mostly economic rather than technical: the cost of retooling manufacturing, signage, and decades of imperial-denominated infrastructure has repeatedly outweighed the benefit of switching, even though US science and medicine already use metric internally.
